Two crazy stories from one wedding at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Detroit MI
This wedding starts out with an amazing coincidence. I was driving down 96 heading for Blessed Sacrament Cathedral Detroit from our office in Plymouth when I spotted a group of guys in tuxedos stranded on the side of the road changing a tire. My intuition was in high gear and I immediately thought wouldn’t it be crazy if these were the groomsmen for the wedding I was heading for? I pulled over and sure enough recognized the groom and could not believe the story-line that was about to unfold.
I pulled off to the side and grabbed the camera and started recording. Luck would have it that a couple of very kind gentlemen had just stopped and offered help in changing the tire. These two guys turned out to be good friends and we’re just out heading for lunch. They saw the groomsmen in trouble and decided to be good samaritans. They were even reluctant to take money but after a strong insistence from the father of the groom the two helpers took their money. I’m sure we’re grateful but it wasn’t expected.
Off to the Church for the wedding.
We piled back into our vehicles and made our way down to Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Detroit where the bride and her ladies were just arriving. No one was late and it all worked out perfectly well. I guess that’s the advantage of being early to events. I’ve often told clients that if they’ve got a half an hour for pictures and they’re 15 minutes late, they’ve lost half of their time. It’s good advice that I would give to anybody having a wedding that staying on time can make the difference between a comfortable and fun wedding and one that’s full of stress running behind schedule.
The service at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Detroit.
The Catholic mass at the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral is amazing. It is a super beautiful Church and one of our favorites in the city. Of course, as you well know, the Catholic mass is about an hour and we took our family photos right after the service. Our next stop was the Detroit institute of arts. We then made our way over to the Lincoln Street Art Park not too far away where another crazy story unfolded.
While we were taking pictures we heard a gunshot just up the street and a car went racing past us. Some guy leaving the scene ripped past us in a car and his baseball hat flew out out the window and onto the street. It landed at our feet as we were all ducking for cover. It was crazy! I took a picture of the hat to mark the occasion and I am pretty sure one of the bridal party took it home as a souvenir.
Downtown on the waterfront then off to the party.
After leaving The Blessed Sacrament Church in Detroit we also spent a little time down on the waterfront before we headed out of town and back out to Livonia for the reception. The party was held at the Italian American Club in Livonia. It’s a beautiful spot and another place we like working very much. We managed to get some detail shots before the room opened and there’s a lovely picture of the Bride putting the cake topper on. It’s kind of interesting to see the cake without a topper and then the topper being put on it. We left it in for fun!
As the cocktail hour got underway and the bride and groom were introduced the mood in the room was high energy. This wedding holds the record for the longest booking out time frame. They booked us almost two and a half years in advance. It makes sense when you realize that Kelly was into an advanced degree program and had her plans very well laid out! It came off perfectly and we had a ball. They danced and played and about sunset, we went outside for some absolutely gorgeous night shots.
Looking forward to our next adventure.
